Kalin grew up stomping through the woods and swimming in the lakes of Minnesota before heading to Alaska for college. She trained as a wildlife biologist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and enjoyed an adventurous 15-year career with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game as a moose research biologist and pilot until resigning to focus her energy on raising her two inquisitive young children.

Kalin spent nearly 3 decades exploring all corners of Alaska and loves nothing more than learning something new about the natural world. She delights in all parts of the outdoors: textures from mud and tree sap, sounds from bird songs to storm thunder, colors from fireweed magenta to the turquoise of dragonfly armor. She especially loves watching and guiding her children as they discover connections between beauty, science and art in the wild and is constantly rediscovering the boreal forest through their eyes. She firmly believes the best lessons come from experiencing the natural world around us.

Kalin brings to forest school a deep love of children and learning, as well as a scientific background in boreal forest ecosystems. She has been known to sit down on a sandbar and weave a basket out of the local willow, or climb a tree right behind her son. She is looking forward to the community of forest school and the incredible dynamic that happens almost magically when children step into the woods.
